Balance Restored offers Prenatal Massage Therapy

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

I am excited to announce that I recently completed an advanced certification training in maternity massage therapy.  My instructor, Carole Osborne Sheets is widely recognized as one of the pioneers in prenatal massage.  Needless to say, it was an awesome experience to be her student and learn this work that is vital to our mothers.

Massage opens a door to rest, relaxation and body awareness as a mother’s body changes and prepares for birth.  Mind body and spirit all benefit from this ancient nurturing practice.

Massage helps to promote physical, mental and emotional integration. As you lie on the table and surrender to the rhythmic movements of the massage, the music and warmth, the brain releases hormones that stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system inducing a calming and grounded state.

Weight gain and a growing baby contribute to compression and fatigue in the weight bearing joints. As the body changes, nurturing touch can bring relief and comfort. Deep tissue massage helps to reduce musculoskeletal pain and strain.  Swedish and lymphatic massage can help with edema.

Making time for massage also gives mom an opportunity to spend quiet time in rest with her growing baby.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to scan the body and become more keenly aware of the subtle and not so subtle changes that are taking place.  When we understand what is happening to our bodies, we can receive these changes more readily.  An increase in body awareness can lead to a more mindful approach toward body mechanics and posture, which can in turn make for a more comfortable and grace filled pregnancy and delivery.

It’s an honor and privilege to work so closely with women during such a powerful time.  I look forward to facilitating this journey and holding a safe space for everything that comes with bringing new life into the world.

Getting the Most out of your Massage

Getting the Most Out Of Your Massage

Wanda Pierce, Certified Massage Therapist

In these economic times, it has never been more important to receive massage.  At first glance, it may feel like a luxury we can’t afford, but if we can quiet the mind and relax the body when we are under stress, we are better equipped to navigate through the challenges we face. As we search for ways to stretch the household budget like Silly Putty over the Sunday Funnies it’s also important to learn how to get the most out of what we pay for.  A 60-minute massage can feel like 15 minutes if our mind is somewhere else.  Like a bad date, it can also feel like an eternity if we aren’t comfortable.  Here are some tips on how to savor every second of your next massage.

1.     Arrive early.  This will ensure that you get the full time you’ve paid for.  It also gives you some time to settle in, have some tea, use the restroom and absorb the calm atmosphere.  Rushing to a massage is like watching the last half of a good movie.

2.     Communication is key.  Be clear with your massage therapist about what you want from your massage before getting on the table.  In addition to injuries and preferred pressure, it is often useful to share what is going on emotionally.  A good massage therapist will take your input into account and customize a session that’s right for you.

3.     Make sure the room feels just right.  Goldilocks knew all about this!  Confirm the temperature is to your liking, the music is at the right volume and the face cradle is just where it needs to be.

4.     Focus.  Keep your attention on the session, not your next errand or earlier phone conversation.  Stay present to the areas where your massage therapist is working.  The plates will still be spinning when the massage is over, but you will be better equipped to keep them spinning if you let your mind take a break while you are on the table.

5.     Breathe!  It may sound obvious but most of the time, we don’t use our lungs to their full capacity.  Mindful breathing, like a magic wand helps with focus and also serves to shift the nervous system into a much more relaxed state.  Start by inhaling to fill the belly, following up into the rib cage and finally to the collarbone.  Exhale slowly, finding a rhythm that works for you.  An easy rule of thumb is to count 5 counts in, 5 counts out.

6.     Pre pay or have your check written out ahead of time.  Finances are stressful, particularly in these times so if you take care of it beforehand, you can relax and forget about it afterward.  No one wants to do math after a great massage.  If a tip is appropriate, have that set aside in advance so you can float out without calculating anything.

7.     Smell the flowers. Take some time after your massage before returning to your regular day.  Enjoy a cup of tea somewhere and watch the world go by or go home to your favorite chair and marinate in the goodness!

When daily obligations fill our lives, it’s easy to overlook the commitment to self -care.  Not only do you deserve some time to recharge, nurture and reconnect with your body, you can’t afford not to.  In the same way we need to tune up our car, we need to nourish our body, quiet our mind and feed our soul to run smoothly in the world.  You’ll be sure to get a lot more mileage out of your session when you follow these simple tips.

Feng Shui and the Year of the Ox.  Kathleen Horvath, CFSC

Have you felt that these last 14 months have been a bit challenging?  According to Chinese Astrology, there is a perfectly logical reason for that.  Let’s go back a few years to recap and bring ourselves up to current time.  In 2006 we had a Fire Pig year, this was the year of the party animal and it did seem like the good times were rolling.  Do you want to borrow an insane amount of money, sure—sign here.  Do you want to buy, buy, buy, sure— pull out the plastic.  We never thought it would end.    In 2007 we had the Fire Dog, and the Alfa Dog certainly showed up. This is the time we started feeling a bite in the behind of our past actions.   This was also considered the end of a 180- year cycle.

What we are experiencing now is the dawn of a new era.  Last year we had the energy of the Earth Rat, the combination of the earth and water (Rat) gave us a very muddy year.  Didn’t it seem as though everything was collapsing and we had no clear direction?  Since this was the beginning of a new cycle, I compare this to a very difficult childbirth.  We are now in the year of Earth Ox, and it seems like we may get a colicky baby.  Don’t be surprised if things seem to have a sluggish start.  In the body, this could manifest as stomach related issues and highly contagious diseases.  This double earth energy is also indicative of active earth energies like earthquakes and landslides.

Do take heart; this is also a time where great accomplishments will happen.  The key, no matter what your yearly animal sign, is to try to act like the energy of the year which is an ox.  When looking at these archetypes always think of how these animals from the zodiac act in their natural world.  The ox is very powerful, hardworking, nose to the grindstone, methodical and never in a rush.  Back to the basics if you will.  Those who will fair the best are the ones who carry these attributes, those who don’t can probably count on health related issues to counter its lack of respect to the ox.

Here is a Year of the Ox factoid.  Did you know that President Obama is an Ox, and that his idol President Lincoln was as well?  Interesting that we have someone who is willing to work hard, go back to basics to get things working right again.  Although we all know it is not going to be easy for President Obama, he has the perfect attributes to turn things around; this is a man who is not afraid of hard work.

Chinese Astrology or destiny code taps into 1/3 of the possibilities, taking this to the next level is to incorporate Feng Shui.  In the Feng Shui world, we consider Chinese Astrology the diagnosis and Feng Shui as the prescription.  The system of Feng Shui and Chinese Astrology has been used for over 3000 years and obviously not a new age trend.  Going on the premise that you are a reflection of your space, empowering yourself by using your space is actually one of the easiest ways to remove obstacles.

Using Classical Feng Shui we can tap into the challenging earth energies of the year to mitigate its ill affects.  What you will need is a compass and a floor plan to get started.  I will be teaching you how to put together the yearly cures to combat the stubborn Earth Ox, as well as how to tap into the wealth area of this year.  These cures are good for one year when the energy changes again.

Donor Egg Selection-An Article for You

Friday, December 26th, 2008

The reality around fertility issues is that YOU need a village.

If you are reading this article, it is likely that you are approaching the donor selection process already having experienced multiple heartbreaks with fertility and with your desire to create a family. You have undoubtedly heard the phrase: “It takes a village,” with respect to the rearing of children. The phrase is often applied to the more mundane or infuriating, aspects of life as well. The reality is that YOU need a village. You need a team of support solely and expressly for you. I want to stress that this is an endeavor in which bearing its solitary weight does not serve you, your child to be, or your family to be. Cultivate and use your village and allow it to nourish and ground you. Your team can consist of many individuals and specialties, which you personally find helpful.

Here I will share with you some members to consider placing on your team. The goal is for you to move through weighty decisions in a supported way, which is pertinent, individualized, and unique to you.

I have developed this article with input from prospective parents, from other parents who have already experienced successful IVF technologies, and from health care practitioners actively participating in teams assisting with family building. It is my greatest hope that this will provide for you some valuable information on your personal journey toward becoming a parent. Here you will find some food for thought and may review some general considerations to assist with your experience.

A lonely process with no guidebook means you must create your own guides

Being on the path of egg donor selection is likely overwhelming.

As an acupuncturist and RN specializing in fertility/reproductive health for men and women, I often witness this struggle. One of my fertility patients aptly described it as a lonely process with no guidebook. By comparison, when you purchase a car, for example, you can conduct exhaustive research. Magazines like Consumer Reports offer the non-partisan, objective facts, as well as a plethora of specialty books and periodicals for the buyer. Moreover, the road to selecting an egg donor is every bit as expensive as purchasing a $30,000 automobile. But unlike choosing a car, it is a private topic about which you may prefer not to solicit input from family and friends, involving something more precious than all things with which money is typically considered—a baby.

The decisions are many and weighty AND you will get through them.

Yes, you do have many decisions ahead of you. It can be all consuming to sift through these and weather the emotional charges associated with them. Remember: you will get through this time. One of the best ways in which to make your way is to create your team of support.

Who might be on your team?

Medical doctors

An Acupuncturist

A Psychotherapist

A Fertility Coach

A Lawyer

A Financial Planner

A Licensed Insurance Agent

Conventional and Traditional Medicine

You will of course require established relationships with your doctors including an Obstetrician and Reproductive Endocrinologist. This is a conventional medicine must.

What you may not readily know is that conventional medicine and traditional Chinese medicine–including acupuncture, Chinese herbs and nutrition–work synergistically to improve pregnancy outcomes.  Choosing an acupuncturist is key to weathering stressors and keeping your body tonified, strong, resilient and in prime condition for the many steps ahead.

Acupuncture has been scientifically found to:

  • Enhance immunities
  • Assist in hormonal balance
  • Statistically improve ‘take home baby’ rates and
  • Reduce stress to improve the way your brain communicates with your reproductive organs.

Acupuncture is one part of a 3,000 year-old complete system of medicine.

The process of acupuncture involves insertion of very fine, flexible needles into

acu-points on the body.  Needles are sterile, used once, and disposed immediately following treatments. They are delicate, much like a cat’s whisker, and are not hypodermic needles in form, function or sensation. Acu-points located along specific pathways are chosen according to your body’s unique needs. Most of my patients fall asleep during treatments due to the deep relaxation treatments generally induce.

Are you concerned about the education and credentials of your acupuncturist?

Knowledge of training should put you at ease.  Acupuncturists licensed in California are legally recognized as primary health care providers and are licensed herbalists as well. California acupuncturists are trained in 4-year masters degree programs, which total more than 3,000 hours of graduate studies. At websites such as the California Department of Consumer Affairs Acupuncture Board www.acupuncture.ca.gov, you can research Oriental medicine, practitioners and verify licensure. Please also see the American Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (AAAOM) www.aaaomonline.org and www.AcuFinder.com websites to research specialties and topics of interest. Many insurance companies cover acupuncture and I personally have a billing service which makes it easy to facilitate use of your coverage.

Donor selection and you: mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

In addition to combining conventional and traditional forms of medicine, remember to take good care of yourself mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This aspect of your team involves choosing a psychotherapist and a fertility coach. I clinically observe that my fertility patients who actively pursue therapy and coaching move through challenges more easily and with greater senses of well-being and peace. Additionally I want to stress that therapy and coaching work synergistically with acupuncture. For example, I frequently use acu-points to address key emotions pertinent for the individual.

Ahead of you there are emotional wrestling matches amid donor research and selection. Support both your body and soul at this time. Donor selection and fertility stressors have the capacity to impact you, your primary relationship, your physical, mental and emotional health, your family dynamic, your career progression, and your finances, etc.

With choice comes complexity

Never in history have people been able to make the decisions that the wonders of technology afford us today. However, this blessed opportunity brings about choice and choice ushers in complexity. It does not translate to an easy process. You need emotional and spiritual support. Seek it. Discussion with trained, compassionate, and mature professionals is invaluable.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy and drop-in support groups prove to be exceptionally healing for my patients. At Balance Restored Center for Integrative Medicine in Mill Valley, we have three psychotherapists on-site. All specialize in fertility and family therapies. Dr. Ellen Hammerle, the head of our Psychotherapy department, offers rare expertise to persons in the process of family building at each of its many levels.  Ellen is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT #32398) and holds a doctorate in clinical psychology. The current emphasis of Ellen’s work is on the integration of Western Psychology and spiritual wisdom teachings; of body, mind and spirit. The application of these tenets is pivotal for fertility and post-partum support groups. Please see our News Blog at www.BalanceRestored.com for postings re: our available support groups.

Fertility Coaching-creation of your life plan

Coaches are fabulous for co-creating with you your desired life plan. Keep in mind that this can be important time for you to nurture other dreams in addition to that of having a baby. Plans keep you moving forward even when emotions run high and tend to cloud activities. A coach will help you define your needs and goals. With support and compassion, a coach will monitor your progress and keep you accountable to your goals. There are coaches who specialize in fertility challenges and even those who draw from personal experience of the various paths of IUI, IVF, donor selection, surrogate selection etc..

I would like to refer you to www.FertilePerspectives.com, a website created by coach, Merideth Mehlberg ACC. Merideth draws from more than 15 years experience in the business world having functioned as a product manager, business analyst, and project manager. She is the author of the book: The Power of Plan B: How Infertility Can Transform Your Life. From her solid, analytical skill set, she coaches her clients to dream big while creating plans with manageable steps toward those dreams. Being herself a survivor of what she aptly calls the “fertility maze”, Merideth brings to you support to promote creation of your passions, focus, and life goals. You can reach Merideth at mer@fertileperspectives.com or 510-864-0249.

Psychotherapy vs. Coaching-drawing distinctions

You may wonder about differences in psychotherapy and coaching.

Psychotherapy is like looking into your rear view mirror of your life. You see behind you what you have already passed and also that which has influenced your experience of your journey. There are profound life experiences in your rear view mirror, which mold how you move forward to present and future endeavors.

Coaching is like looking through the windshield of your car to the path ahead of you and deciding how you will navigate that unfolding road.

Both specialties are important: your past and your future.

Fertility challenges are not your fault, nor are they a measure of your worth

Interestingly I find that sometimes clients are reluctant to invest in their spiritual and emotional health in this most trying of times. It can feel indulgent when so many other resources in their lives are being dedicated to fertility processes. Some women share with me that they feel as though they have failed or let themselves or their mates down to find themselves struggling with fertility challenges. What I will share is that you are experiencing a situation of intensity for which you must give yourself every ounce of compassion and utmost credit. You always deserve to be treated well, to be loved and honored and to be supported in your journey.

Legal, Financial, and Insurance advisors on your team

A wise teacher of mine once said: plan as though for all eventualities, then live with joy as though life will unfold perfectly.

Independent of those of your fertility clinic or other agencies, it is wise to hire your own legal, financial and insurance advisors. These professionals protect and educate you. While the realms of law and money might trigger stress or anxiety, it is always preferable to operate in a well-informed and educated manner. It is money well spent.

Know your responsibilities as well as the donor’s responsibilities and review the plans for possible scenarios such as donor back-out etc. In my practice I find some clients who do not want to consider undesirable possibilities. In contrast, other clients focus so very much energy upon the scary “what if” scenarios that much precious energy is lost.  A place in-between is most in balance. It is wise to plan in case bumps in the road occur and then set about choosing the best possible plan for you.

Options to Investigate

•Shared risk programs available at some clinics. These are programs in which you prepay for multiple cycles at a discount, and there is a refund available if you do not take home a baby following care.

• Tax breaks may be available to you.

•Donor/Recipient accidental health insurance.

Honor yourself

There is a 5 Element Acupuncture saying that the each person who enters our doors is the likes of which we shall never again see. Each person is unique, special, and sacred.  You are unique, special, and sacred. Honor yourself in this process and create your village. I wish you well in your journey and selection. The Flu Shot: Pros and Cons by Karen Reynolds, L.Ac., M.S., R.N.

THE FLU SHOT: PROS AND CONS

This article presents a short history of the flu shot, how it is developed, sources for information and pros and cons of the vaccine.

The conventional flu shot, though readily available and vigorously marketed, has come under scrutiny by scientists and the general public alike. While citizens in the United States can conveniently get flu shots at local neighborhood drug stores, it is interesting to note that the European Union does not standardly administer or offer flu shots.

To get a sense of flu history: there have been multiple epidemic and pandemic outbreaks documented since the 1800’s. Pandemic outbreaks affect many areas of the world simultaneously whereas epidemic outbreaks affect many people at same time within one local area. The last pandemic flu season occurred in 1969-1970 wherein the peak incidence reached 1252 persons for each 100,000 persons. This was reported in England and Wales by the Weekly Returns Service (WRS) of the Royal College of General Practitioners. There was an increase in 1989-90 affecting 233 per 100,000 persons as its peak. Comparatively other years have registered around 100 persons per 100,000 at peak. Flu season generally lasts between 8-11 weeks each year. However do note: the flu has actually steadily decreased over the last 30 years.

A flu diagnosis is generally made on the basis of fever, respiratory symptoms and cough. However doctors agree that it is difficult to distinguish flu from other respiratory diseases and illnesses. Flu symptoms, especially in children, have considerable overlap with other seasonal diseases such as Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). Both are associated with acute bronchitis and otitis media (ear infections). This is one reason why it is difficult to accurately determine if a flu vaccine works.

Scientists from around the globe contribute to the development of each season’s flu vaccine. The formula must be changed from year to year because flu strains mutate and change rapidly. Production takes about 6 months. Therefore it is all too possible for a flu strain to become rampant before a vaccine is even available.

It is important to note that these scientists come up with the best possible vaccine. However in the end it is an educated guess not a guarantee. For example in the 2003-2004 season a flu strain called A/Fujian was active. Production of the vaccine was already underway when it became apparent that A/Fujian was a culprit, and it was not included in that year’s vaccine. Ultimately only a partial protection was gained from that year’s flu vaccine.

The flu vaccine is grown in fertilized chicken eggs. This is why flu shots are contraindicated for those with severe allergies to egg proteins and people with a history of Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Other concerns about the flu shot arise regarding the inclusion of thiomersal as an antiseptic and antifungal agent in vaccine solutions. Thiomersal kills Staphylococcus aureus which can grow in preservative free solutions. The necessity of preservatives became apparent following such instances as the 1928 diptheria vaccine (lacking preservatives), which killed 12 of the 21 children who received it. Thiomersal makes it possible to for the health care industry to use multi-dose vials of vaccines as opposed to single dose vials, which are more expensive.

Thiomersal is a mercury derivative and is very toxic by inhalation, ingestion, and in contact with skin. Thiomersal  can also build up in the body. It is logical for consumers to have concerns about flu shots containing thiomersal. Please note that in the U.S. and the European Union thiomersal is no longer used a preservative in routine childhood vaccination schedules. However several vaccines, not routinely recommended for children, do still contain thiomersal. These include: Diphtheria and Tetanus (DT), Tetanus and Diphtheria (Td) and Tetanus toxoid (TT).

In the 1970’s case reports began demonstrating toxicity to the nervous system in persons exposed to large doses of topical antiseptics containing thiomersal. In the 1990’s, mercury poisonings began to steeply rise as did incidences of autism diagnoses. This prompted U.S. authorities to lower reference “safe” doses for mercury.

In 20 years of intensive care nursing, I have seen many patients become ill, some severely so, following flu shots. Proponents of the flu shot say these cases are unrelated or incidental. Please do review information at the website for The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htm which offers information about the various vaccinations.

The CDC specifically states that “people who have a severe reaction to an influenza vaccination” should avoid it. This infers that one must get a vaccination and weather the aftermath to determine if they might have a severe reaction. It is also widely accepted that other persons who should avoid flu shots are:

Individuals with severe allergies to chicken eggs,
Children less than 6 months of age

People with “moderate-to-severe illness with a fever”.

This ushers in another debatable set of circumstances given that many hospitals are inoculating all patients admitted. Would not a person being admitted to a hospital have at least a “moderate to severe illness” and many of those in fact with fevers?

When making decisions about your health and well being it is always prudent to review educated views of both proponents and opposition. It is a consideration to weigh the stress to the immune system versus the benefit conferred.

Your immune system is created to protect you. You naturally and biologically are designed to fend off bacterias, viruses and flus. Some of the best ways to enhance your immunities are doing preventative, strengthening things like:

Getting adequate rest,

Cultivating a balanced and healthy diet,

Exercising regularly and consistently,
Getting “tuned up” and rejuvenated with acupuncture.

Acupuncture tune-ups are economical, efficient, and make you feel great. Many of my patients see me once or twice per month-especially during flu season-and opt for the “Acupuncture Flu Shot Treatment”.

The “Acupuncture Flu Shot Treatment” is not a shot at all.

It uses sterile, powerful anti-viral homeopathic remedies in conjunction with acupuncture points. The specific selection of acu-points has demonstrated the ability to boost immunity.

It may be used instead of or in addition to the conventional flu shot.

The recommended protocol:

One 30-minute session once per month, October through March.
